GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Newidouski Leads Dana Hills Into Title Game
Dana Hills used a 9-2 run late in the game to beat La Quinta, 46-38, in one semifinal of the La Quinta High School Tournament.
Adara Newidouski had a game-high 23 points and teammate Karun Grossman added 17 points and 16 rebounds for Dana Hills (5-2). The teams were tied at the half, 23-23, but Dana Hills pulled ahead, 33-28, after three quarters.
Ronnie Gondringer, the sister of former La Quinta standout Donna Gondringer, had 15 points and 12 rebounds for La Quinta (4-1). Dana Hills plays Santiago at 7:30 tonight in the title game and La Quinta plays Los Amigos at 6 p.m. for third place.
In other La Quinta tournament games:
Santiago 62, Los Amigos 20--Forward America Robledo, with 26 points, and Yamila Olmedo, with 23 points and 17 rebounds, helped Santiago (4-1) beat visiting Los Amigos (1-3) in one championship semifinal.
Esperanza 66, John Glenn 31--Lindsay Foss scored 15 points as Esperanza opened a 19-4 lead after one quarter in a consolation-round game. Esperanza plays San Pedro at 4:30 p.m. today for the consolation championship.
San Pedro 27, Foothill 24--Freshman guard Katy Steinle scored nine points, all in the second half, for Foothill (1-9). San Pedro is 2-4.
In the Orange Lutheran tournament:
Century 39, Liberty Christian 23--Forward Mina Alexander had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting Centurions. Teammate Laura Zepeda was the second-leading scorer with eight points and Ariana Moreno had eight steals and six points for Century (5-4). Liberty Christian is 3-4.
In the Bolsa Grande tournament:
Troy 62, Bolsa Grande 35--Jennie Gadd and Audra Gamst each had 15 points for Troy (6-3), which plays for fifth place Saturday with the winner of Friday’s Dominguez/Torrance game.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
El Dorado 58, Canyon 34--Guard Jody Caruso led host El Dorado with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Shanna Renkan had 12 points for El Dorado (7-0). Canyon is 5-1.
Katella 60, El Toro 40--Chris Carrillo had 17 points and teammate Kelsi Armbruster had 11 rebounds for host Katella (5-0).
Sonora 47, City of Industry Workman 36--Sonora trailed, 21-17, at the half but outscored host Workman, 7-2, in the third quarter and 23-13 in the fourth quarter. Guard Chris Nonis led Sonora with 19 points. Six-foot center Jodie Fister had 16 points and 17 rebounds for Sonora (3-2). Charlyn Bender had 10 rebounds and seven points for the Raiders.
Whittier Christian 58, Connelly 35--Alana Kempton had 12 points for host Whittier Christian (4-2). Whittier Christian led, 24-18, at the half but outscored Connelly, 24-7, in the third quarter to pull away.
Costa Mesa 48, Capistrano Valley Christian 30--Junior guard Heather Robinson had a game-high 12 points and eight rebounds for Costa Mesa (5-4). Olivia DiCamilli, an all-Southern Section pick last season, didn’t play for the Mustangs because of illness.
Loara 44, Anaheim 26--Bridgett Marshall had 10 points for visiting Loara.
Mission Viejo 50, Santa Margarita 39--Maggie Gorska had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Treva Whitaker added 16 points for host Mission Viejo (7-1).
La Habra 63, Ganesha 35--Martha Hernandez had 18 points, six assists and six steals for host La Habra, which led, 19-7, after one quarter and, 35-13, at the half.
