ROUNDUP : Harvard-Westlake Shot Down at Finish
El Rancho High’s Dan Dixon made his only basket of the game with two seconds remaining to give the Dons a 78-76 double-overtime victory over Harvard-Westlake in the first round of the La Canada tournament.
The Wolverines (3-2) led by 16 at the half, but El Rancho (2-4) slowly chipped away. The Dons overcame a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, primarily because of Erik Kennady, who scored 17 of his 44 points in the final eight minutes.
El Rancho’s Jason Carvo sent the game to overtime with a layup at the buzzer. Harvard’s Ben Phister hit a three-point shot with six seconds to play in the first overtime to tie the score.
J.W. Hobson led the Wolverines with 30 points and 13 rebounds.
In other boys’ basketball games:
Notre Dame 74, Burroughs 41--Monte Marcaccini scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Knights (6-3) in the first round of the La Canada tournament. Marcaccini scored 10 points in a row and the Indians were held scoreless during a third-quarter run.
Notre Dame point guard Craig Johnson scored 19 points and center Tom Stillwell added 12. Gabe Colon scored 12 for Burroughs.
Hueneme 69, Bakersfield 58--Wendell Nunnery scored 23 points to lead the Vikings (4-1) past Bakersfield (5-2) in a semifinal game of the Channel Islands tournament.
Kennedy 57, Van Nuys 49--Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 31 points for Kennedy (4-5) in a second-round game of the Hamilton tournament. Lorenzo Bobadilla scored 16 for Van Nuys.
Business Magnet 51, Bravo Medical Magnet 49--Business Magnet won its second consecutive Magnet League championship. The key to the game was a 13-4 run by Business Magnet (12-4) early in the fourth quarter.
Dion Harris scored 16 points for Business Magnet.
Providence 86, L.A. Lutheran 51--Hagop Yaglian had 17 points, 11 assists and nine steals in a nonleague game. Barry Dabbaghian scored 29 points and Alex Resnevics added 20 for Providence (7-2).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Oxnard 95, Victor Valley 74--Four Condors scored in double figures and Oxnard outrebounded the Rams, 57-30, in a first-round game of the Cypress tournament.
Tony Ziuraitis (19 points and 10 rebounds), Lance Fay (16 points), Art Wallace (14 points and 13 rebounds) and Stevie Amar (16 points) led the Condors (9-4).
Golden West 99, Canyons 90--Josh Lewis scored 35 points to lead Golden West in a first-round game of the Cypress tournament.
G.C. Marcaccini scored 24 for the Cougars (5-7).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Hart 69, Mountain View 8--Shannon Martin doubled Mountain View’s output with her 16 points in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament. Martin also had 10 rebounds.
Alemany 71, Culver City 43--Samantha Rigley had 26 points and 12 rebounds, and the Indians held Jenny Nakanishi to eight points in the second half after she scored 24 by intermission of a first-round Simi Valley tournament game. Zevette Mitchell had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Alemany (8-2).
Burbank 69, Santa Clara 47--Joceyln Ferialdi scored 18 points and Mandy Villasenor added 14 for Burbank (5-1) in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament. Burbank trailed, 30-23, at halftime, but a 22-10 run in the third quarter erased the deficit.
Bell-Jeff 80, Maranatha 39--Christina Ticsay scored a game-high 26 points for host Bell-Jeff, making five three-point shots in the quarterfinal game of the Burroughs-Bell-Jeff tournament.
Cathy Flores added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (6-2), and Lori Talley had 10 points and 12 assists.
Village Christian 55, Campbell Hall 28--Christy Ludwig and Lindy James each had 10 points for Village Christian (5-2) in a Campbell Hall tournament semifinal.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Burroughs 3, Royal 0--Ian Leiviska scored two goals to lead the Indians (4-1-1). The game was scoreless seven minutes into the second half when Leiviska and Hiro Ikezaki scored goals about two minutes apart.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Peninsula 3, Royal 2--Kelly Adamson scored a goal and assisted on another but the Highlanders lost their final nonleague match of the season. Peninsula scored three goals on only six shots.
Louisville 4, Thousand Oaks 2--Cindy Daws of Louisville (5-2-1) broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second half when she scored on a penalty kick, and Andrea Lincari added another goal with 12 minutes remaining in the nonleague match at Thousand Oaks.
