GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hines, Weddick Lead the Way for Orange Lutheran

Michelle Hines scored 17 points, and tournament most valuable player Kristin Weddick added 12 to help Orange Lutheran defeat Calvary Chapel, 44-41, in the championship game of the Orange Lutheran girls’ basketball tournament Saturday at Orange Lutheran.

Led by all-tournament player Blythe Linsey, Calvary Chapel (5-2) outscored Orange Lutheran in the third quarter, 11-2, to take a 35-34 lead before the Lancers (5-4) rallied for the victory.

Hines also earned all-tournament honors with Calvary Chapel’s Courtney Owens.

In other Orange Lutheran tournament games:

Woodcrest Christian 39, Century 36--Shannon Hanks scored 16 points for Woodcrest (5-2) in the third-place game. Nina Alexander scored 15 points for Century.

Villa Park 49, Liberty Christian 17--Tara Earl scored 14 points to lead Villa Park (4-4) to the consolation title.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

South Torrance 47, Magnolia 28--Barbara Mathews and Gillian Geraghty each scored eight points for Magnolia (4-4) in the third-place game.

Troy 52, Torrance 48--Brandee Richardson had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Troy (7-3).

In the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions:

Rancho Alamitos 63, Righetti 43--Akilah Rodgers had 33 points and 13 rebounds for Rancho Alamitos (4-1) in a first-round victory.

In the La Puente tournament:

El Dorado 64, Pomona Catholic 30--Nicole Debruijn had 20 points to lead El Dorado (9-0) in the first round.

In a nonleague game:

Katella 51, Savanna 40--Chris Carrillo had 16 points to lead Katella (6-0) past Savanna (3-5). Sarah Works of Savanna led all scorers with 24 points.
