Novell to Buy Unix System Laboratories: Novell Inc., the leading maker of software that links personal computers in networks, said it will buy a software company controlled by AT&T; for about $335 million in stock. Under the proposed Novell deal, existing shares of Unix System Laboratories will be exchanged for up to 12.3 million newly issued Novell shares. USL, based in Summit, N.J., will become an independent subsidiary of Novell. Analysts described the acquisition as a defense by Novell against the growing power of Microsoft Corp. Next year, Microsoft will unveil a new version of its Windows operating system that contains built-in networking technology.
