Disturbance at Riot Site
In response to “Sometimes Force Is Necessary,” editorial, Dec. 16:
Your editorial makes the obvious assumption that the Dec. 14 events at Florence and Normandie were considered justifiable (or that unjustifiable force is necessary sometimes?).
The protesters say they were not making trouble, that police arrested them with no order to disperse. Chief Willie Williams doesn’t deny this account. In Mike Rothmiller’s book, “L.A. Secret Police,” the former officer cites examples of how the Los Angeles Police Department provoked trouble to facilitate false arrests. Why are leaders inclined to assume that the LAPD has changed?
The Times seems to believe the LAPD is telling the truth and that citizens are lying.
