CARL’S JR. HOLIDAY CLASSIC : Garden Grove’s Comeback Sinks Villa Park, 51-44
SANTA ANA — Garden Grove, which scored two points in the first quarter, rallied to beat Villa Park, 51-44, Saturday in a first-round game of the Carl’s Jr. Holiday Classic at Century High School.
Villa Park opened a 12-2 lead after one quarter but Garden Grove pulled to within 23-17 by halftime. The Argonauts trailed by two, 36-34, entering the final quarter. Cornel Archer scored 18 points for Garden Grove, which will play Westminster in the second round at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
In other Carl’s Jr. Holiday Classic first-round games:
Westminster 55, Buena Park 52--Lac Tan scored 21 points for Westminster (4-4). Robert Ishii added 14 for the Lions. Alex Tolentino had 22 for Buena Park (5-5).
Santa Ana 65, Costa Mesa 64--Gus Garcia scored the winning basket on a follow shot with five seconds left to lift Santa Ana (4-3) to a first-round victory over Costa Mesa (5-2). Fred Mora and Charles Thomas each scored 16 points to lead Santa Ana, which plays Sonora in the second round at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Sonora 70, Anaheim 37--Chris Campbell and Chris St. Clair scored 22 and 21 points, respectively, for Sonora (9-2) in its victory over Anaheim (2-7).
Trabuco Hills 89, Los Amigos 38--Jerron White scored 16, Matt Moore 14, and Pat Barnes 12 for Trabuco Hills (9-3), the sixth-ranked team in Orange County. Trabuco Hills led, 31-11, after one quarter and 51-17 at the half. The Mustangs play Sante Fe St. Paul at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday in the second round.
Brethren Christian 49, Century 35--Reggie Brown scored 14 and Andy Brown added 12 for Brethren Christian, which plays Santiago in the second round at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday. Darvin Thompson scored 14 for Century.
Santiago 64, Cypress 51--Steve Davenport, John Pelayo and Yang Ung scored 13 points each for Santiago (3-4). Cypress is 5-4.
