Obituaries : William C. Trueheart; Former U.S. Mission Official in Saigon
William C. Trueheart, 74, deputy chief of the U.S. mission in Saigon just before the American military buildup in Vietnam. He was in Saigon from 1961 to 1964 and was one of the first American diplomats to raise concerns about the ability of the Diem government to withstand growing public disapproval, especially criticism from Buddhist monks. He was director of Southeast Asian affairs at the State Department from 1964 to 1966. From 1969 to 1971 he served as ambassador to Nigeria. In Washington on Dec. 24.
