COSTA MESA TOURNAMENT : DiCamilli Comes Through for Costa Mesa Girls Again
COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa senior Olivia DiCamilli has been an offensive threat since her freshman year.
Wednesday night, she scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 53-44 victory over Arroyo Grande in the championship game of the Costa Mesa tournament.
DiCamilli, who was named tournament MVP, scored 15 points in the first half as Costa Mesa (9-4) overcame a first-quarter deficit to lead 27-22 at the half.
“She’s had to carry the weight for the last four years,” Costa Mesa Coach Lisa McNamee said. “If we need offense, there’s no question who we want to get the ball.”
Arroyo Grande (9-3) led, 12-11, after the first quarter behind center Mindy Smith, who scored three baskets on short jump shots. McNamee countered by bringing in 6-2 center April Vansweden, who held Smith to one basket the remainder of the game.
DiCamilli, who will play for San Diego State next season, averaged 16 points in the four tournament games despite being limited to six points against Goleta because of the flu. The 5-foot-10 forward took advantage of every scoring opportunity, converting several shots against two defenders.
“I’d like to see her take the initiative more at times,” McNamee said. “I love having a player like Olivia on the floor.”
The Eagles stayed close throughout the contest behind Stacy Andrews’ game-high 27 points. Andrews brought Arroyo Grande to within 49-42 on a three-point basket with less than two minutes to play, but the Eagles could get no closer.
Andrews, who was named to the all-tournament team, made 12 of 14 free throws. Smith and Jennifer Napoli added eight points each for Arroyo Grande.
