ROSE BOWL / DAILY REPORT : WASHINGTON : Unloading of Tickets Is Not That Easy
Washington’s ticket office Wednesday still was trying to sell about 7,000 tickets for Friday’s Rose Bowl game. The tickets are left over from the 41,000 the Rose Bowl allotted to Washington.
Michigan, which was allotted 21,000 tickets, has about 5,000 remaining.
It is the universities’ responsibility to sell the tickets. If they don’t, they absorb the loss. At $46 per ticket, Washington stands to lose about $322,000 and Michigan about $230,000. The money is deducted from the bowl payout to each team.
Washington and Michigan can probably afford it, since both teams will earn $6.5 million, which will be shared with other conference schools, for playing in the Rose Bowl.
A wet field at Occidental College again forced Washington to move its practice to the artificial turf at East Los Angeles College. . . . Washington Coach Don James turns 60 today. His schedule includes a news conference at the tournament house in Pasadena, a walk-through practice at the Rose Bowl followed by a team photo, a Kiwanis luncheon and then team meetings. . . . The Huskies will have 95 players in uniform, the Rose Bowl limit, and another 40 players not allowed to suit up watching in the stands.
