Nicole Provis and Wally Masur upset higher-ranked opponents Amanda Coetzer and Wayne Ferreira, and carried Australia to victory over sixth-seeded South Africa in the first round of the Hopman Cup team tennis tournament at Perth, Australia.

Provis saved a match point in the final set tiebreaker and beat Coetzer, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Masur then defeated error-prone Ferreira, 7-5, 6-3.
