What better way to mark the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday than with gospel music--and the Thompson Community Singers.

This nationally known community choir from Chicago, headed by the Rev. Milton Brunson, will highlight an evening of music Sunday at El Camino Community College to celebrate the life of King, who was born Jan. 18, 1929, and assassinated April 4, 1968.

Other singers and choirs scheduled to appear include Gwen and Willie Williams, Brandy Norwood, the Southside Church of Christ Concert Chorus, Faithful Central Baptist Church Voices of Faith, Kimble Community Choir and Christ Second Baptist Church Choir.

The Thompson Community Singers are being billed as the main attraction of the event, organized by Los Angeles County’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Formed by Brunson in 1948, the choir is known for songs including “Available to You,” “Father, Open Our Eyes,” and “You Didn’t Give Up on Me.”

Tickets, $18 apiece, will be available at the door and at locations including the El Camino Recreation District Office, 419 192nd St., Carson, and Word of Life Christian Bookstores, 7223 South Main St., Los Angeles, and 6321 West Boulevard, Los Angeles. Parking will be free.
