LOS ANGELES : RTD Votes for 2 Days of Free Subway Service

Transit officials Thursday approved free fares for the first two days of service on the city’s new subway.

The Southern California Rapid Transit District board voted to establish a two-day free fare period when the Red Line subway opens Jan. 30--a stance that puts the agency in conflict with its partner agency, the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, which is considering a two-month free period.

Mayor Tom Bradley said he will intervene in hopes of establishing a free fare period of one month.

The LACTC will vote on the issue later this month.
