* * Heavy D. & the Boyz, “Blue Funk,” Uptown/MCA. The “Heavster” is all over the place on this one--bouncing from boasting to romance to social commentary to silly humor. His rapping fluctuates wildly too, from glib speed-rap to gibberish. Musically, it’s diverse and ambitious, but with one exception--the sleek funk-jazz of “Silky”--all this doesn’t add up to much.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
