‘94 Rose Parade Theme Is ‘Fantastic Adventure’
Delmer Beckhart, who has been named president of the 1994 Tournament of Roses, has selected “Fantastic Adventure” as the theme of the 105th Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1, 1994.
Beckhart, an architect and vice president of Pedersen, Beckhart, Wesley and Stice Architects, has been a volunteer with the Tournament of Roses Assn. for 24 years.
He joined the association in 1969, has served on nine committees and had been chairman of Public Relations, Transportation and Float Construction.
In 1987 he was elected to the Tournament’s nine-member Executive Committee, from which presidents are selected.
Bob Cheney, the 1992 president, will be replaced on the executive committee by Lorne J. Brown, an attorney who has chaired five committees during his 25 years of volunteer service. Gary Hayward, the 1993 president, will remain on the committee for one more year.
Kazuo Ikeda, a scientist with the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope in Duarte, has received the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator award for outstanding research in the field of neuroscience.
The award, given by the National Institutes of Health, carries a $1.39-million grant to be funded over seven years.
The money will enable Ikeda to continue studying the mechanisms involved in nervous system information processing and the genetic basis for these mechanisms.
The Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator award was established by Congress in 1985 to promote the development of neurosciences. It is named in honor of the late U.S. Senator Jacob Javits, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
