NHL ROUNDUP : Capitals Are Hard to Beat on Home Ice
The Washington Capitals extended their unbeaten streak in the Capital Centre to a club-record 13 games Sunday with a 2-2 tie against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Washington is 9-0-4 at home since Nov. 20, outscoring opponents, 63-43. The unbeaten string surpasses the previous high set in 1982 and marks the first time the Capitals have gone two consecutive months without a home loss.
However, the second-place Capitals have not beaten a team with a winning record since New Year’s Day, and still trail the Penguins by 17 points in the Patrick Division.
The Penguins were behind, 2-1, with 12:47 to play when Joe Mullen put a deflection of a slap shot by Jim Paek past goaltender Don Beaupre.
Edmonton 5, Buffalo 4--Kelly Buchberger scored three goals, including the game-winner 46 seconds into overtime, to lead the Oilers at Buffalo.
Buchberger put the final goal past goaltender Tom Draper after Craig MacTavish was foiled on a wraparound attempt. Pat LaFontaine scored two goals for the Sabres.
Montreal 6, Philadelphia 4--Gary Leeman scored his first two goals for the Canadiens as Montreal ended a five-year home winless streak against the Flyers.
Montreal Coach Jacques Demers gained his 300th NHL victory. His nine-year record is 300-304-91.
