E. Whittier Schools : Parents to Be Appointed to Open-Enrollment Panel
District officials will appoint parents to an administrative committee to study whether families should be allowed to choose their children’s public schools.
The action is the latest district effort to evaluate open enrollment.
A public hearing on the issue Monday drew little community response, but some district officials remain enthusiastic about the idea.
“Rather than leave public education and go to private schools, (parents) should have a choice within their own neighborhoods,” school board member Mary Ann Wojtysiak said. “They’re going to feel better about public education. They’re going to be more supportive.”
Parents appointed to the study committee will join five principals and two administrators who are researching open enrollment. Officials said they have specific parents in mind for the committee, but they welcome input on the issue.
The committee will report its findings to the school board March 8.
