Long Beach : Residence for Low-Income Senior Citizens Vetoed
Mayor Ernie Kell has vetoed a proposal to convert a downtown office building into a low-income, senior citizens apartment complex after residents complained that it would bring in too many poor people and hurt property values.
The City Council voted 5 to 4 to let Southwest Securities of Long Beach convert the eight-story building at 117 E. 8th St., but Kell vetoed the council action Tuesday; an override would have required six council votes.
The Planning Commission approved the proposal, which would have created 91 apartments, last December. But residents of a nearby condominium complex appealed to the City Council.
