PREP ROUNDUP : Canyon Girls Wrap Up Soccer Title

Canyon, the sixth-ranked girls’ soccer team in Orange County, clinched the Century League championship by defeating El Modena, 1-0, Thursday at Canyon High School.

Krista Broughton scored a first-half goal and goalkeeper Tina Thompson made six saves and posted her 17th shutout of the season for the Comanches (19-2, 8-0 in league). Canyon has not allowed a goal in league play this season.

Amy Moreno had four saves for ninth-ranked El Modena (13-4-2, 5-2-1).

In another Century League game:

Orange 3, Villa Park 0--Carrie Knorr, Anna Eschenman and Mary Pezzetti each scored one goal in the second half for host Orange (10-7-2, 4-4). Leah Naujoks had six saves for Villa Park (3-4 in league).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 0, Los Alamitos 0--Kristee Schmidt had eight saves and Nikol Scrivner made seven for visiting El Dorado (11-6-2, 5-1-2). Third-ranked Los Alamitos (13-3-2, 6-1-1) remained in first place in league.

Esperanza 2, Loara 2-- Jennifer Salerno and Darlene Gilchrist scored for Loara (7-9-1, 2-5-1). Kathy Haerle and Jennifer Parkison each scored a goal for defending league champion Esperanza (7-7-7, 4-1-3).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 4, Troy 2--Deborah Hargrave and Amy Freilich each scored twice and Mindy Nelson had three assists for visiting Fullerton (7-12-2, 3-5). Kirsten Foley and Emily Keeler each scored for Troy (12-6, 4-4).

Sunny Hills 3, Sonora 0--Center forward Jamie Gardiner scored three goals and Leah Russell had two assists for Sunny Hills (15-2-2, 7-0-1). Sonora is 5-10-3, 3-5.

In Garden Grove girls’ soccer:

Bolsa Grande 2, Rancho Alamitos 0--Jennifer Miller and Stacy Engelhard scored for Bolsa Grande (2-5-1 in league).

Kennedy 1, Pacifica 0--Adrienne Poan scored for Kennedy (13-2-3, 8-0). Pacifica is 6-2 in league.

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 3, Orange Lutheran 2--Shawnna Johnson and Mary Jo de Jesus each scored second-half goals for Orange Lutheran (6-7-2, 3-4-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 5, Anaheim 2--April Delamater, Aliva Anthony, Cynthia Barajas, Erin Wright and Lorin Smith scored for Brea-Olinda (11-6-3, 7-0-1). Anaheim fell to 4-8-3, 3-4-1.

Valencia 5, Western 0--Lena Trevino had two goals and two assists for visiting Valencia (8-7-2, 6-1-1). Western is 4-10-3, 1-6-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Michelle Rabisay scored for Estancia (14-5-3, 7-1), the 10th-ranked team in the county. Trabuco Hills is 13-9 and 5-3.

Laguna Hills 1, Costa Mesa 0--Berkely Edwards scored and goalkeeper Sarah Lang recorded her 14th shutout of the season for Laguna Hills (15-7, 7-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 8, Westminster 0--Kari Hogancamp and Christine Tyler each scored two goals for visiting Edison (17-4-1, 8-1-1). Westminster is 6-11 and 0-10.

Huntington Beach 2, Rosary 1--Cayce Meade and Eileen Dunaway scored for Huntington Beach (10-10-3, 3-5-2). Amy Shanks scored for Rosary (6-11-1, 2-7-0).

Marina 4, Fountain Valley 1--Amy Rubenstein, Amy Peterson, Sarah Heilman and Rhiannon Tanaka scored for Marina (14-4-3, 8-2), which is ranked fifth in the county. Molly Sinclair scored for Fountain Valley (7-7-8, 2-4-4).

In Metro League boys’ basketball:

Lake Elsinore Bundy Canyon Christian 67, Pacific Shores 37--Chris Ross had 27 points and 15 rebounds for host Pacific Shores (0-8, 0-5).

In Sunset League girls’ field hockey:

Santiago 1, Santa Ana 0--Sam Nguyen scored the game’s only goal and goalkeeper Cosseth Varona posted her 18th shutout of the season for league champion Santiago (19-1-2, 13-0-1). Santa Ana is 2-6-9, 1-6-7.
