Cost Reduction: “Painful measures” continue for the San Diego Symphony, whose musicians have endorsed concessions of more than $600,000 in payroll cuts for next season. The vote comes less than four months after the musicians agreed to cut their 1992-93 season from 36 to 33 weeks and reduce the current contracted minimum annual salary from $28,080 to $24,750. The board president applauded the “generosity and devotion” of the musicians and expressed confidence that the orchestra would “not only survive this recessionary period but move past it.”
