Hundreds of miners in Russia’s Arctic North have launched a sit-in protest below ground at one of the country’s biggest coal pits, local officials said Sunday.

A duty officer said by telephone from the Arctic city of Vorkuta that 230 protesters were in the Vorgashorskaya mine, but the miners’ strike committee put the number at 314.

The mine, one of 13 in and around the former penal colony of Vorkuta, has been a focus for labor unrest since early December.
