PREP PREVIEW 1993: GOLF : Santa Margarita
Coach: Dave Duran (sixth year)
1992: 17-1, 7-1; second place in the Angelus League; won Western Regional; third in Southern Section team championship; fourth in CIF-SCGA championship.
Key returners: Kellee Booth, Jr., averaged 75, won the CIF-SCGA girls’ championship; Mark Foster, Sr., averaged 77; Ryan McLaughlin, Sr., averaged 78.
Key newcomer: Steve Wagner, Fr.
Outlook: Although Santa Margarita lost seven seniors to graduation, it still has one of the deepest teams in the county. Duran, a teaching pro at El Niguel CC, said he will probably have to cut 27 of the 47 players who have tried out. Part of the reason for the program’s popularity is that the Eagles practice and play matches on three of the Southland’s finest courses--Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon and Tijeras Creek. This year Duran hopes to take another step up. “That’s what we’re setting our sights on, and we’re not looking back in the six years of the program (in which) we’ve been able to improve each year. And there are only three more spots open.”
