LOS ANGELES : Rappers Plan Concerts to Promote Gang Peace

A coalition of Latino and African-American rappers announced plans Monday to hold a series of benefit concerts to promote peacemaking efforts among gangs in various Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Using the slogan, “Stop the Violence, Increase the Peace,” the musicians applauded black gangs in Watts for the truce they forged last year, and urged Latino gangs in South and East Los Angeles to join them in a unified peace movement.

The first concert, scheduled for Thursday night at the Mayan Theater at 1038 S. Hill St., features rap artists D.J. Quick, Paper Boy, Hispanic MCs, Brown 4 Life and others. Proceeds from the $16 tickets will go to community groups that have been working to end gang violence, said promoter Khalid Shah of KROC Productions.
