Myanmar Slams Nobel Laureates as ‘Evil’
BANGKOK, Thailand — A top official in Myanmar has described a group of eight Nobel Peace Prize winners as “evil” troublemakers after they campaigned for the release of dissident Aung San Suu Kyi.
Khin Nyunt, the ruling junta’s intelligence chief and believed to be the most powerful man in the country, formerly Burma, said the group was trying to stir up trouble.
“Evil external influences are falsely accusing Myanmar of human rights violations,” Khin Nyunt said Saturday. His comments were broadcast by Yangon Radio on Tuesday.
The laureates visited Thailand last week in a highly publicized campaign to secure the release of fellow laureate Suu Kyi, under house arrest in Yangon since 1989.
