Long Beach : Schools Urged to Cut Health Benefits in Tight Budget
Residents advising the Long Beach Unified School District on ways to cut $9 million from next year’s budget proposed Monday that the board trim employee health benefits.
An advisory committee of employees, meanwhile, suggested cuts in administrative spending.
Cuts are not expected to be made by the board until April, district officials said.
The advisory committees have met weekly since their formation early this year. Each group told the board Monday that it tried to suggest cuts that would least effect students.
The residents’ group suggested cutting almost $2.5 million from the budget by limiting the district’s contribution to employees’ Blue Shield coverage. Among 12 other recommendations, the group proposed reducing spending on athletic transportation.
The employees’ group proposed holding pupil-free days on the same day at all district schools to trim business costs.
