LOS ANGELES : Ethics Unit Denied Funds to Hire Another Investigator

The city Ethics Commission, citing “a number of highly sensitive investigations into serious violations of state and city campaign finance laws,” unsuccessfully appealed to the City Council on Friday for money to hire an additional auditor for its staff.

The council refused to allow the exemption to a citywide hiring freeze, even though the commission said its investigations would be likely to result in the levying of fines up to $100,000. The auditor’s position, intended to fill a staff vacancy, was expected to cost $16,715 for six months.

In his request for the exemption, Ethics Commission Executive Director Benjamin Bycel did not identify the targets of the investigations mentioned.
