BRAIN BOOST: Worried about dwindling research dollars, the president of AST Research Inc. in Irvine has made a $1-million personal donation to expand UCI’s Bonney Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. . . . Safi Qureshey and his wife, Anita, had long wanted to support health research, but their 6-year-old daughter’s near-drowning accident four years ago has led them to focus on brain studies. “To attract top scientists, there needs to be a place for them to work,” Qureshey says. “This research will take years and years so it may not have any direct benefit on . . . our daughter.”
