GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dorsey and Agiza Prove Too Much for Roosevelt, 58-53
With or without Tamu Agiza, Dorsey High was too much for Roosevelt on Friday.
Agiza, who sat out most of the third quarter with a sprained ankle, managed a game-high 33 points to lead the Dons past the Roughriders, 58-53, in a City 4-A quarterfinal game at Roosevelt.
Agiza, a 5-foot-9 forward scored 18 first-half points and returned in the fourth quarter to score 15 of her team’s 21.
With Dorsey holding a 44-43 lead, Agiza, scored 12 during a 14-4 run, which gave the Dons a 58-47 lead with 49 seconds left.
Dorsey center Donna Lincoln added 19 but only three players scored for the Dons, who are seeking their first appearance in a City championship game since 1984.
Denise Caudillo had 25 points for Roosevelt, including three three-point baskets.
Caudillo, who had 24 points in Roosevelt’s 75-45 first-round victory over Westchester, made consecutive three-point baskets to help the third-seeded Roughriders race to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes.
Records: Dorsey 18-7; Roosevelt 16-6.
Crenshaw 64, South Gate 56--Kim Howse scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Cathleen Grice added 16 points to lead top-seeded Crenshaw to a City Section 4-A quarterfinal victory.
South Gate trailed by as many as 17. They pulled within eight during the final two minutes, but time ran out. Michele Gonzalez and Nancy Maciel scored 11 points each for the Rams, who had five players in double figures.
Records: South Gate 19-5; Crenshaw 22-2.
Kennedy 56, Washington 53--Sharmanee Bundy had a team-high 14 points for Washington, but the four-time defending 4-A champion were unable to hold on to a three-point fourth-quarter lead in a 4-A quarterfinal playoff loss at Kennedy.
Records: Washington 10-15; Kennedy 18-5.
Jefferson 76, Sylmar 37--Shonte Tippie had 34 points and 10 rebounds as the top-seeded Democrats breezed to a City 3-A Division quarterfinal victory at home.
Records: Sylmar 7-11, Jefferson 25-3.
Monroe 60, Bell 47--Aracely Cordova led three Bell players in double figures with 13 points, but the Eagles were unable to rebound from an early first-quarter deficit in a 3-A quarterfinal loss.

South Gate 66, Venice 61--Senior Michelle Gonzalez scored 26 points and freshman Ruby Maciel added 15 to lead South Gate to a City 4-A playoff victory.
Records: South Gate 19-4; Venice 16-7.
Crenshaw 103, Franklin 28--Michelle Keyes and Cathleen Grice scored 29 and 20 points to lead the top-seeded Cougars, who had 31 steals in a 4-A first-round game at Crenshaw.
Records: Franklin 12-7; Crenshaw 20-2
Chatsworth 59, Lincoln 54--Inocencia Ibarra scored 18 points and Diane Reyes added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Tigers in a City 4-A first-round loss.
Records: Chatsworth 11-12, Lincoln 4-10.
Jefferson 63, University 43--Shonte Tippie scored 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead top-seeded Jefferson to a City 3-A first-round playoff win.
Record: Jefferson 23-3.
