SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MEN’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL REGIONALS : Shelton, Livingston Direct Cypress to Victory
Robbie Shelton and Anthony Livingston each scored 16 points and Cypress displayed a solid effort on defense in a 65-54 victory over Bakersfield in a Southern California playoff game Saturday at Cypress.
Cypress led most of the first half before Bakersfield finally went up, 29-27, with two minutes and 36 seconds left in the half.
But from there, Cypress went on a 10-0 run the rest of the half to lead, 37-29 at the break.
Shelton, a sophomore forward, had six of the 10 points in the run as he converted on a pair of three-point plays.
The run continued on the second half as Cypress pulled away.
The Chargers (26-8) outscored the Renegades, 24-4, over the first 12 minutes to hold a 51-33 lead with 8 minutes 9 seconds to play.
Cypress’ man defense was especially effective against Bakersfield’s Chris Brown in the second half.
Brown came into the game with 130 three-pointers and averaging 19 points. He scored 11 in the first half including a pair of threes.
But thanks to the work of Gary Gibbs, Bret Evans and others, he was held to one basket--a three-pointer with 33 seconds left--in the second half.
“We got a pretty good group effort on defense,” Cypress Coach Don Johnson said. “I was happy for the intensity and for the most part the unselfishness of our team.”
