Policeman’s Son Dies After Killing Officer, Injuring 3
HALTOM CITY, Tex. — A police officer’s 14-year-old son, apparently enraged by being disciplined for a bad grade, opened fire from a house and killed a police officer and wounded three civilians, then later was found dead, police said.
The three wounded were listed in serious condition Sunday at two hospitals. Two of the victims were teen-agers and the third was an older brother of one of the youths.
The police officer was shot Saturday afternoon when he responded to a 911 call from a neighbor reporting gunfire, officials in this Ft. Worth suburb said.
Police were unable to aid the fallen officer, identified as Gary Hires, 48, because of the heavy rain of gunfire from the house.
Almost an hour after the shooting began, a special detachment of officers fired several shots at the house while others removed Hires.
Officers using stun grenades stormed the house during the night and found Juan Ramon’s body lying amid an arsenal of loaded rifles and other weapons, authorities said.
Police believe that Ramon was killed by shots fired by officers as they tried to rescue Hires, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.
