SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP BASKETBALL REGIONAL PLAYOFFS : BOYS : Division IV
Corcoran vs. Corona del Mar
SITE--Corona del Mar, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS--Corcoran (21-6), Corona del Mar (17-12).
CORCORAN--Lost to Bakersfield Garces in the Central Section championship game. Corcoran also lost its leading scorer, point guard Larry Luna, who severely sprained his right ankle midway through the third quarter. Athletic director J.R. Williams said Luna (16 points a game) will not play tonight. Four of Corcoran’s losses were to Coalinga, the East Sequoia League champion, by a total of 11 points. Corcoran usually plays eight or nine players. Its tallest player is sophomore John Santos, a 6-6 forward.
CORONA DEL MAR--The fourth-seeded Sea Kings are led by guard Todd Merriman (17 points a game) and forward Chris Quinn (12 points, nine rebounds) and defensive specialists Dan MacMillan and Eli Wendell. Corona was averaging 67 points a game in playoffs until scoring 47 against St. Bernard in the championship game.
KEY TO THE GAME--How much will Corcoran miss Luna, its leader? Corona isn’t big and might have a tough time keeping Santos off the offensive boards.
CONSENSUS--The disciplined and defensively sound Sea Kings should have enough to get by Corcoran, but the next round against top-seeded Gardena Serra might not be as easy.
