SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP BASKETBALL REGIONAL PLAYOFFS : BOYS : Division I
Huntington Beach vs. Vista
SITE--Vista High School, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS--Huntington Beach (28-4), Vista (28-2).
HUNTINGTON BEACH--Three of the Oilers’ four losses came to top-seeded Mater Dei, which defeated Huntington Beach, 63-41, in Saturday’s division title game. Huntington Beach made only 15 of 44 shots, including an 0-for-8 performance from off-guard Tommy Walden. Forward Matt Ambrose scored four points, eight less than his average.
VISTA--The third-seeded Panthers went 14-0 in the Palomar League and have won 24 in a row. They are led by the Jager brothers. Shane Jager, a 6-foot senior guard, was second in San Diego County in scoring, averaging 25.2 points. He set a section record with 37 consecutive free throws this year. Matt Jager, a 6-5 sophomore forward, averages 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Jagers combined for 44 of 64 points in Vista’s San Diego Section title-game victory over Poway.
KEY TO THE GAME--Can Huntington Beach forget about Saturday night’s loss? If not, the Oilers might find themselves out of the tournament. Can Huntington Beach break Vista’s press and take a very-raucous Vista crowd out of the game early?
CONSENSUS--The helter-skelter style and the three-point shooting of Vista may be too much for a team trying to come out of a funk. But if Vista can not match up with Huntington Beach’s 6-5 power forward Tony Gonzalez, the Oilers have a shot.
