BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Ponchak’s Home Runs Lead Fountain Valley; Ocean View’s Gildae Pitches Four-Hitter
Brian Ponchak hit two home runs to help Fountain Valley to a 4-1 victory over Cypress in a championship second-round game of the Loara Tournament Monday at Fountain Valley.
Ponchak, a senior right fielder, had a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third that gave the Barons a 4-0 lead.
Ara Petrosian (1-0) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory for Fountain Valley. Fountain Valley will play Sunset League rival Ocean View in the quarterfinals at 7 tonight at Glover Stadium.
In other championship-round games of the Loara Tournament:
Ocean View 8, Loara 1--Pat Gildae pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts for visiting Ocean View (2-0) at Boysen Park. The Seahawks’ Steve Rivera, Mike Bellovich and Chris Castellano each had two hits.
Villa Park 2, La Quinta 1--Matt Parker pitched a five-hitter with three strikeouts and also had the game-winning hit for host Villa Park (2-0). His RBI-double broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. La Quinta is 1-1. Villa Park will play at Irvine, a 7-3 winner over Marina, in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal game today.
Irvine 7, Marina 3--Ryan Jones had a two-run home run during a five-run sixth for visiting Irvine (2-0). Marina (2-2) scored three runs in the sixth to break a scoreless streak of 12 innings by Irvine pitchers to open the season.
Huntington Beach 11, San Clemente 5--Ryan Brannan hit his second home run of the season and struck out 10 batters in four innings while allowing three unearned runs for Huntington Beach (2-0).
Brannan, who has signed with Miami, has 19 strikeouts in eight innings pitched this season. Ryan Scott homered for San Clemente (1-1).
Huntington Beach plays host to El Dorado, an 11-1 winner over Kennedy, in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal game today.
El Dorado 11, Kennedy 1--Jeff Moore had three hits and four RBIs including a three-run home run to highlight a six-run fourth inning. Benito Flores, Don Jamieson, and Dave Perry combined on a one-hitter for visiting El Dorado (2-0).
Lakewood 8, Los Alamitos 3--Marc Albert and Clay Kemp each had two hits for host Los Alamitos, which will play tomorrow at El Toro in a consolation game at 3 p.m.
Diamond Bar 5, El Toro 1--Mike Lutterlow had a home run for host El Toro (1-1). John Heaton had a two-run home run in the seventh for Diamond Bar (2-0). Diamond Bar will host Lakewood in a quarterfinal game today.
In the consolation round of the Loara Tournament:
Dana Hills 8, Los Amigos 6--Scott Maynard had three hits and drove in three runs for visiting Dana Hills (1-1). He also pitched the first four innings for the victory. Daron Payne had three hits and drove in two runs, and Seth Etherton had a two-run home in the seventh to give the Dolphins an 8-2 lead.
Western 10, Laguna Hills 1--Art Garcia held Laguna Hills hitless for 5 2/3 innings, earning the victory after allowing two hits and one unearned run and striking out eight in six innings for Western. Jeff Livingston had two hits, including a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored for host Western (1-1).
Santiago 10, Anaheim 4--Luis Perez (1-1) took a no-hitter into the seventh before allowing a home run but still got the victory. Ruben Castaneda had three hits, drove in a run, and Anthony Duran had two hits including a triple and drove in two runs for Santiago (1-3).
University 8, Riverside J.W. North 3--Stuart Vidanage had three hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs for visiting University (1-1). Spencer Illingworth pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Trojans.
Servite 2, Savanna 1--John Morinaga pitched a three-hitter for host Servite. Joe Vargas had a two-run single in the third also for Servite.
Magnolia 11, Pacifica 6--Dennis McGown hit a triple and a home run and had four RBIs for visiting Magnolia (1-1).
Katella 23, Sunny Hills 7 (6 innings)--George Schalip had three hits and five RBIs for visiting Katella (1-1). Sunny Hills pitchers walked 19.
In the Glendora baseball tournament:
Sonora 9, Monrovia 4--Peter Lythgoe, the winning pitcher, had two home runs and five RBIs and Junior Rodriguez hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning for Sonora. Rodriguez got the last out to earn the save.
