HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Diaz Propels Kennedy to 10-1 Victory With 4-Hitter
Right-hander Miguel Diaz, who threw a no-hitter last week, tossed a four-hitter Tuesday to lead Kennedy High to a 10-1 victory over Franklin in a San Fernando tournament game at Kennedy.
Diaz (2-0) struck out six, walked two and did not allow an earned run. Diaz, a senior, has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings. Richard Prieto had three hits for Kennedy (3-0).
In other San Fernando tournament games:
Thousand Oaks 7, Granada Hills 3 (8 innings)--Clint Harris had a two-run double to key a four-run eighth inning for Thousand Oaks (2-1). Harris pitched the final three innings to earn the win.
Rob Cohen hit a three-run home run in the first inning for Granada Hills (1-2).
San Fernando 9, Poly 2--In a game that featured seven errors and no extra-base hits, Mario Salcido was two for four with two runs batted in for the Tigers.
Birmingham 6, Agoura 5--Don Wingo keyed the Braves’ victory by hitting two solo home runs.
EL SEGUNDO TOURNAMENT
Crespi 8, Edison 1--Keith Evans pitched five shutout innings and struck out seven for Crespi in a semifinal game at Valley College. Four players had two hits for Crespi (3-0), including Casey Snow, who went two for two with two RBIs.
Gahr 7, Westlake 2--Westlake managed only four hits in a consolation-round game. Steve Klein was two for three, including a triple for Westlake (1-2).
Simi Valley 14, Westminster 6--The top-ranked Pioneers (3-0) racked up 16 hits, led by Britten Pond (three for three), Ryan Hankins (four RBIs) and Bill Scheffels and Aaron Whitley (double, triple), who each went three for four.
WESTSIDE TOURNAMENT
Notre Dame 4, Sylmar 3--Left-hander Chris Garza allowed two hits over six innings, struck out eight and walked none in a battle of unbeaten Westside tournament teams. Cesar Martinez had two hits for Notre Dame (3-0). John Bohman (1-1) took the loss for Sylmar (2-1).
Taft 14, Harvard-Westlake 11--Josh Irving drove in three runs on two hits and Mike Ferguson was three for three for Taft (3-0) in a third-round game. John Shaeffer was two for two with a home run for Harvard (0-3).
Rio Mesa 11, Palisades 3--Sophomore Rudy Swanger was two for four, including a double and a home run, with six RBIs. Swanger had a bases-loaded double to highlight a six-run third inning and a two-run home run in the fifth.
Chatsworth 13, Channel Islands 2--Mark Lopez, Brandon Murphy, Tony Montiel and Ray Daryibigi each had three hits for host Chatsworth. Daryibigi, a sophomore left-hander, allowed one earned run and six hits over six innings. He struck out three.
Saugus 14, Hueneme 5--The Centurions scored all their runs in the third inning that featured eight hits, six walks, an error and a hit batter. Kevin Brown’s three-run triple and two-run singles by Danny Cato and Bobby Cowan keyed the inning.
Peninsula 4, Royal 3 (8 innings)--The Highlanders fell to 1-2 when reliever Phil Derryman threw a wild pitch on Peninsula’s suicide squeeze attempt with one out in the eighth. Royal’s Mike Worford had tied the score in the sixth with a two-run homer.
VAN NUYS TOURNAMENT
Van Nuys 4, Reseda 3--Benjamin Navarrete (2-0) pitched a five-hitter and had two doubles for visiting Van Nuys (2-1). Travlon Trammell homered for Reseda.
