OUTLOOK
A uncharacteristic fifth-place finish in the league last year “left a bad taste in our mouths (that) we’re hoping to rectify this year” according to Barrett. The Seahawks served notice early that they going to be a force in the league by winning Vince Brown’s winter baseball league in Irvine with a 16-3 record. Ocean View beat highly regarded Irvine and Mater Dei two out of three games. Ocean View managed only two hits off Dana Hills ace Seth Etherton in its opener but made the most of them. Hughey hit a three-run homer, and Bellovich had a two-run double to the left-field corner to account for five runs. “Hughey is going to hit a few this year,” Barrett said. “He’s a shortstop with pop.” Rivera is the best player on the team and a two-time all-league selection. He had 18 stolen bases as a junior. Barrett says Brunette is one of the best all-around players in the league. Gildea and Churchill are transfers from Huntington Beach, where Barrett teaches.
