COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Errs Often, Pepperdine Wins

Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton, which played for the NCAA Division I baseball title last June, met Wednesday for the first time since the College World Series with the Waves winning, 13-3, in front of 1,274 at Fullerton.

Fullerton, which has lost three of its last four games, made six errors leading to four unearned runs for Pepperdine (11-7), which is ranked 20th by Baseball America.

Fullerton (8-7) is ranked seventh.

Pepperdine, which beat Fullerton for the title last season, 3-2, opened up with four runs in the first against starting and losing pitcher Derek Fahs (1-1).

Mark Wasikowski, from Los Alamitos High School and Rancho Santiago College, had an RBI single to score Eric Ekdahl, from Mission Viejo High School, with Pepperdine’s first run. Pat O’Hara added a two-run double, and Ryan Radmanovich had a triple to score O’Hara and give Pepperdine a 4-0 lead.

Fullerton came back with single runs in the first three innings, but Pepperdine scored another run in the fourth and five more in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead.

David Lovell had three hits and two RBIs, and Ekdahl had two hits and two RBIS for the Waves. Dante Powell had two hits, including his fourth home run for Fullerton. Jeremy Carr had also had two hits for the Titans.

This was supposed to be the second meeting of the teams this season, but the Feb. 23 game at Pepperdine was postponed because of rain. That game has been moved to April 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Pepperdine.

Fullerton next plays Friday at UC Santa Barbara in a 2:30 p.m. game, the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

In another nonconference game:

Biola 4, Christ College Irvine 3--Dan Davis had a home run and double for host Christ College Irvine (6-7-1). Biola (6-8) scored four runs in the seventh to erase a 3-0 Christ College Irvine lead.
