21 Sent to Hospitals After 33-Car Crash on Slippery I-80 Near Reno
RENO — Twenty-one people were sent to hospitals after a 33-car collision late Friday night on Interstate 80 west of here, authorities said.
The Nevada Highway Patrol blamed the 11:30 p.m. accident near Gold Ranch, Nev., on slippery pavement.
Troopers said rain fell on oil-soaked stretches of I-80 where potholes had recently been repaired.
The accident closed the interstate in both directions for about four hours. The accident occurred just east of the California-Nevada line.
Eight of the injured people were taken to Washoe Medical Center and eight were taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, both in Reno. Five were sent to Sparks Family Hospital.
Meanwhile, at least five vehicles were involved in accidents on the same stretch of I-80 on Saturday night.
At least four people were sent to Washoe Medical Center, but their conditions were not known, a nursing supervisor said.
