Doctor Killed at Abortion Clinic

In response to “Who Says This Isn’t Terrorism?” by Helen Neuborne, Commentary, March 12:

Let’s try to keep things in perspective regarding the outrageous murder of Dr. Gunn; this tragedy should not be used as an excuse to savage the right to peaceful differences of opinion. Few would argue that the perpetrator of this heinous act should go unpunished. Most of those who are pro-life will no doubt agree that the taking of Dr. Gunn’s life was not justified.

However, even Ms. Neuborne must agree that those of us who have peacefully picketed in front of abortion clinics have the constitutional right to do so. While I do not condone the actions of violent pro-life protesters, I also do not condone pro-choice protesters who have mockingly teased that the Virgin Mary should have had the option of abortion while we protest abortion by praying the Rosary. Will some slick group use the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act of 1993, if passed, to prevent such praying? Count on it.

Dr. Gunn’s murderer will have his day in court and will receive whatever punishment he deserves. Rationality, however, must prevail. Broad sweeping proposals to limit freedom of expression and association because of this murder would be dangerous for our nation; I fear, however, that this murder will be used for justification for such limitations.
