The Barefoot Billionaire and Uncle Sam
I am always heartened when Calendar combines an entertaining feature with an extraordinary good. The March 7 edition carried at least two such examples: the cover story on David Geffen and the Elizabeth Taylor profile.
Here are two lives marked by distinction in their fields, riches, honors and fame. Yet the thing that distinguishes most, and most profoundly, is their contributions to the fight against AIDS.
Geffen fights with his power of choice, money and influence. Taylor, compassion her name, gives dignity to the patients themselves. There her money (and heart) does go.
These are examples of a Hollywood holy. They can coexist. Thank you, David and Elizabeth, for your refusal to ignore with fear, hide in denial or give up the fight. Thank you, Calendar, for courage in print.
