CRENSHAW : Single-Parent Shelter to Open
American Philanthropy Assn. Inc. will open a single-parent shelter today in a 3 p.m. ceremony at 8770 S. Broadway.
The 93-bed facility is the third opened by the Crenshaw-based association, which operates one in South-Central and another in Pico-Union. They provide transitional housing, meals, stress management and job counseling to low-income or needy single parents, usually referred by churches and government agencies.
The nonprofit association was founded in 1978 by the Rev. Toney Chisum to assist the disadvantaged in South and Central Los Angeles. In addition to the shelters, it has two food distribution centers that feed approximately 3,500 families per week, said association spokesman Jim Vann.
The shelter is seeking volunteer clerical support, tutors, cooks, maintenance personnel, drivers and journeyman tradesmen.
