COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Olsen’s Single Wins Game for Titans

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th, D.C. Olsen hit a single over a drawn-in outfield to score Kyle Evans from third to give Cal State Fullerton a 6-5 victory over New Mexico State in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Titan Field.

Fullerton (14-7, 5-0) trailed, 5-3, until Adam Millan and Evans each hit sacrifice flies in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score, 5-5.

Titan starter Dan Ricabal allowed two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings, and teammate Ted Silva struck out five over the final 3 2/3 innings for his third victory. Dante Powell hit his sixth home run for the Titans.

Al Sanderson hit a three-run home run, his sixth, in the eighth to give New Mexico State (16-10, 0-2) a 5-3 lead.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 4-3, Cal Baptist 0-11--In Game 1, Ryan Meredith went the distance, striking out eight batters and allowing three hits for the victory for SCC (11-9, 4-4). Albert Contrera went two for four with one RBI for SCC.

SCC’s Alberto Contrera hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season, in the second game. Teammate Ted Weiczorek hit his third homer in the fourth. Cal Baptist is 8-15, 3-4.

In a nonconference baseball game:

Chapman 6, Dartmouth 3--Bob Skapik scattered nine hits to earn his second victory, and Octavio Medina and Brian Greene each had two hits for Chapman (14-13) at Hart Park. Dartmouth is 1-2.

In GSAC softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 8-1, Christ College Irvine 0-0--In the first game, catcher Lasondra Kellum hit a first-inning double for host CCI (2-8, 0-6).

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 11-10, Whittier 6-0--Beth Howard threw a one-hitter in the second game, and Celeste Gordon had four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader for host SCC (20-6-2).

In GSAC men’s tennis:

Southern California College 7, Cal Baptist 2--In No. 1 singles, SCC’s Bobby Carlton defeated Carlos Vasquez, who finished second in the District 3 championships last season, 6-3, 6-1, for SCC (9-6, 1-5) at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Cal State Long Beach 3, UC Irvine 0--Alex Huang and Scott Clarey each had 10 kills for Irvine (2-14, 1-12) which lost, 15-3, 15-8, 15-8.

At the NCAA wrestling championships in Ames, Iowa:

Grubbs Finishes Fifth--Michael Grubbs of Cal State Fullerton defeated Matt Hanutke of Wisconsin, 3-2, to win fifth place. The Titans finished 26th in the team competition.
