Alan Eberhart, who coached linebackers and the offensive line at Crescenta Valley last season, will succeed Jim Beckenhauer as football coach next season.

Eberhart, 36, was the only Crescenta Valley assistant to apply for the position, which was vacated by Beckenhauer after he led the Falcons to the Southern Section Division II semifinals.

The Marshall High boys’ volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday by defeating Van Nuys, 15-4, in the championship match of the 15-team Sylmar tournament.

The Barristers, 6-0 and 3-0 in the City Section’s Northern Conference, will participate in the 15-team Palisades invitational tournament Saturday at Santa Monica City College.

More than 80 high schools from California will compete in the 51st annual Pasadena Games that will be staged Saturday at Occidental College.

Nine boys and nine girls from Glendale-area schools will play for the West teams Saturday night in all-star basketball games featuring seniors from the West San Gabriel Valley.

The games will be played at La Canada High. The girls start at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8.

Dave Craig and Jason Pruett of St. Francis, Brandon Crane and Eric Danneker of La Canada, Chirag Desai of Glendale Academy, Joe Khouzam and Chad Reese of Hoover, and David Sofro and Hai Tran were selected to the boys’ team. Tim Rupieks of Flintridge Prep is an alternate.

Girls participating include, Paula Bautista of Glendale Academy, Nancy Evans of Hoover, Denise Gutierrez and Erin McGoldrick of Flintridge Sacred Heart, Nada Kawar and Keri Peterson of Crescenta Valley, Melissa Lord and Gloria Nunez of La Canada, and Melanie Slocum of Flintridge Prep. Lina Davidian of Flintridge Prep is an alternate.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team entered the week 12-8 and 8-6 in the Western State Conference after an 8-7 defeat by conference-leading College of the Canyons last weekend.

Robert Mancilla hit a two-run home run and John Horan had a three-run homer for the Vaqueros, who trail Canyons (12-1) and Los Angeles Valley (9-5) in the WSC.

“We’re capable of playing better than we have,” Glendale Coach Steve Coots said. “We have to eliminate the bad inning defensively. We made three errors against Canyons, and they were all in the same inning.”

Mickey Moreno is batting .465 with three home runs and 24 runs batted in for the Vaqueros. Mancilla is batting .354 and has stolen 23 bases. Lance Evans is batting .341 with three homers.

Pitcher John Nall is 4-2 with a 4.45 earned-run average. Mike McMullen is 3-3 with a 4.33 ERA.

Glendale will play host to Oxnard in a WSC game Saturday at Stengel Field.

The Glendale men’s and women’s track teams will participate in the Northridge invitational Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College baseball team, in the midst of spring break, will resume its schedule Friday with a nonconference game against Biola.

Occidental is 9-7-1 and 5-4 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Senior catcher Bob Kennedy is batting .413 with 10 runs batted in for the Tigers. Junior outfielder Stuart Kramer is batting .408 with a conference-leading five home runs and 20 RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Paul Grim is 3-1 with a 4.42 earned-run average.

Individual members of the Occidental men’s and women’s track teams will participate in the Northridge invitational on Saturday.

The Occidental women’s team is 3-0 in the SCIAC, having defeated Claremont, La Verne and Cal Lutheran during a quadrangular meet a few weeks ago.

The Occidental men are 2-1, having lost to Claremont in the same quadrangular meet.

Jeff Campbell, women’s volleyball coach at Occidental and an assistant men’s coach at Cal State Northridge, has been named to the staff of the men’s West team that will participate in the Olympic Festival this summer at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Campbell will assist John Roberts, the men’s volleyball coach at Menlo.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Gerald de la Pena, Hoover--Pena, a sophomore, pitched a two-hitter and gave up one earned run in eight innings as the Tornadoes defeated Arcadia, 5-4, in the Pacific League opener for both teams.

Pena retired 13 consecutive batters to finish the game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

J.P. Roberge, USC--Roberge, a former standout at St. Francis High, had three hits during the Trojans’ 5-1 Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division victory over California.

Roberge, a sophomore, entered the week batting .240 with one homer and eight RBIs for USC, which is 16-12 and 8-4 in conference and ranked 11th in the nation by Baseball America.

MISCELLANY

Wally Ritchie, a former pitcher at Hoover High and Glendale College, was released by the Dodgers earlier this week. The Dodgers had signed Ritchie, hoping he could fill their need for a left-handed reliever. Ritchie had a 6.75 earned-run average in five spring appearances. . . . Exercise classes for women 40 and older, and karate classes for adults and children ages 5 to 14 are among 50 classes being sponsored by the Glendale Department of Recreation and Parks.
