Six of the 17 boats have withdrawn from Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s race to Cabo San Lucas, which has been so plagued by light winds that it might be the slowest race to Mexico ever.

The race started last weekend from Newport Beach. Closest to the finish at Thursday’s roll call was Neil Barth’s new Excel 53, Persuasion, which was 70 miles away after starting the race a day ahead of the top-rated International Offshore Rule-A class. That class was led by Doug Mongeon’s Nelson-Marek 68, Swiftsure III, which was 204 miles from the finish.
