NORTHRIDGE : CSUN Moves to Expel Art Student

Cal State Northridge officials are seeking to expel a graduate student who was fired from a teaching assistant job for giving a homework assignment requiring students to draw nude self-portraits, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The student, Rupert Carl Stechman, 25, is being expelled for allegedly violating rules of student conduct for participating in a protest of his firing from a $20-an-hour job teaching Drawing 1, according to a letter he received from university officials.

Stechman and about 20 of his students, angry over his dismissal, barricaded themselves Feb. 17 in a conference room outside CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson’s office. After 90 minutes, the group left without incident.

Stechman, who is one semester from completing his graduate art degree, plans to appeal the decision, said his mother, Sharon Stechman.
