Mission Possible

Jack Mathews’ article on the historic Mission Inn in Riverside (“Old World, New Mission,” March 14) was wonderful and accurate. When I saw all the scaffolding around this priceless building, I, too, mourned the needed removal of the maze of ivy and other “minor” things in order to make it structurally safe--precisely the elements that gave character to the building. From the photos, much has been retained--at least it wasn’t turned into a glass-walled, modern building!
