COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Dietrich Loses No-Hitter in Ninth, Rancho Santiago Advances to Final

Rancho Santiago’s Jason Dietrich lost a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth when Oxnard’s Tom Queenen hit a home run, but Rancho Santiago won, 3-1, Thursday to advance to the championship game of the Channel Coast baseball tournament today.

Dietrich, a sophomore right-hander from Mater Dei, struck out 12 and walked three before Queenen slammed a 1-0 fastball.

Dietrich hit the next batter, then was relieved by Steve Thobe, who got the final out for his fifth save of the season.

Rancho Santiago (22-5) will play in the title game against the winner of the Ventura-Santa Barbara game at noon at Ventura College.

In the Hancock tournament:

Cypress 18, Cerritos 3--Josh Kliner, who had three hits, including a grand slam, and eight RBIs to break a two-week old school record held by teammate Greg Tippin, who had seven in a game. Teammate Greg Cole contributed four RBIs.

Cypress will face Harbor in the title game at 2 p.m. today at Hancock in Santa Maria.

In the Visalia tournament:

Fullerton 8, Saddleback 3--Mickey Fortie had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Fullerton (19-10), which advanced to the title game. Teammate Jeff Kafoury had a triple. Saddleback dropped to 19-10.
