Stricter Regulations Urged for 900 Numbers: Attorneys general from 18 states urged the Federal Trade Commission to tighten regulations on 900 numbers and similar pay-per-call telephone services. The state prosecutors said companies offering 900 numbers often do not clearly disclose the price of calls and engage in deceptive advertising. The attorneys general want to prohibit 900-number advertising directed at children except for legitimate educational programs. They also asked the FTC to tighten regulations for sweepstakes offered through 900 numbers. Attorneys general from the following states made the request: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
