BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Gross Draws Honor of Starting Today

One of the only bright spots for the Dodgers last season was Kevin Gross’ no-hitter on Aug. 17 against the San Francisco Giants, a 2-0 victory at Dodger Stadium.

Despite his 8-13 record, Gross was the most consistent pitcher on the staff, ending the season with a 3.18 earned-run-average, four complete games, three shutouts and a team-high 158 strikeouts in 200-plus innings.

Gross (1-0) is the starter for today’s home opener at Dodger Stadium. But he doesn’t limit his artistry to baseball. Using pencil and oils, Gross sketches and paints wildlife scenes, which can sell for up to $500. He donates most of his paintings and prints to nonprofit organizations for auctions.

Left-handed reliever Mark Davis will be put on waivers today if the Atlanta Braves have been unable to trade him. If no team claims Davis by Friday, the Dodgers, who are interested, can negotiate with him without inheriting his high salary.
