The city of Lancaster has been awarded a $1-million grant to fund the purchase of 50 mobile homes that will be offered to low-income residents.

The grant, received from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, will help fund the city’s Redevelopment Agency’s affordable housing program. It is the largest competitive grant the city has received since the city incorporated in 1977, city officials said Tuesday.

City Manager Jim Gilley said that next month the city will begin bidding on mobile homes, which will be rented to low-income residents. He said he expects the city to receive the grant money by the end of June and begin placing the mobile homes in existing parks later in the summer.
