Countywide : County Accepts Funds for Library

Moving to keep Ventura Avenue’s tiny library open at least through December, 1994, Ventura County supervisors Tuesday accepted $38,000 in donations for the facility’s operating costs.

The money, presented to the board by Ventura City Councilman Gary Tuttle and several library patrons, was collected through both private and public donations after the county announcement more than two months ago that the library would be closed because of financial problems.

County officials decided Feb. 2 to give the facility a 60-day reprieve after community members said they wanted to try to raise the money.

The money was collected mostly during a four-hour telethon held earlier this month. The Ventura City Council also agreed to donate $15,000.

“People were calling in making $500 pledges,” Supervisor Susan K. Lacey said. “I think it’s wonderful.”

Added Supervisor Maggie Kildee: “It buys us some time.”
