SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

As his teammates dashed from the dugout chanting, “no-no, no-no,” Simi Valley High pitcher Bill Scheffels had the shocked look of someone on the outside of an inside joke. But this was no joke. Scheffels had just pitched the first no-hitter in school history, a masterful 11-strikeout, two-walk shutout of Pittsburg (Calif.), 4-0, in the first round of the High Sierra Classic at Sparks High.

Everyone, it seemed, knew about the no-hitter except Scheffels (7-0), which explained the did-I-just-do-what-I-think-I-did look.

“I didn’t know I had it until the last strikeout,” Scheffels said with a grin. “After I figured out what happened, it was like, ‘Wow, I just threw the first no-hitter in school history.’ ”

Former Simi Valley standout Scott Radinsky, now in his fourth year with the Chicago White Sox, had four one-hitters in 1986.

“Now we finally have one that’s legitimate,” Coach Mike Scyphers said.

Simi Valley (15-1), debuting as the No. 1 team in a USA Today poll released Monday, advanced to a quarterfinal against College Park of Pleasant Hill today at 4 p.m.

The no-hitter is the first in the tournament’s seven-year history and only the second shutout. Good pitching and a stiff wind blowing in from center field conspired to slow Simi Valley’s powerful offense.

Simi Valley, which won four games by a combined score of 54-18 in winning the prestigious Upper Deck tournament last week, managed only six hits.

“With the exception of Bill, I think we came out flat,” Scyphers said. “We haven’t practiced in four days. That and the pressure of being No. 1 may have had something to do with it.”

Ryan Hankins drove in Simi Valley’s first run with a single in the third inning. The Pioneers added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to push the lead to 4-0.
